چکیده

EFFECTS OF RUBBER ADDITIVES ON PROPERTIES OF ASPHALTIC MATERIALS by JOHN ALBERT ALEXANDER Submitted to the Department of Civil Engineering on August 17, 1968, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Civil Engineering. This study investigated the modification of asphalt with various rubbers and the effect of this modification on the values of fracture toughness at low temperature. Test results indicated that the fracture toughness of asphalt can be substantially increased by modification with a small percent of either a suitable rubber in latex form or with a low molecular weight liquid rubber that is crosslinked after dispersion by the use of an epoxy and hardener. The effects of an accelerated aging procedure on the modified asphalts revealed that the prolonged exposure to high temperature further increased the fracture toughness while fracture toughness of unmodified asphalt was lowered by exposure to the same aging procedure. Addition of mineral filler increased the flexural strength of the test beams but did not significantly change the fracture toughness of the modified asphalt. A brief study of the various modifications at the magnifications provided by the optical microscope revealed a strong relationship between the fineness of the rubbery second phase and the values of critical strain energy release rate. Thesis Supervisor: Fred Moavenzadeh, Ph.D. Title: Associate Professor of Civil Engineering

Investigating the Properties of Asphalt Concrete Containing Glass Fibers and Nanoclay

The performance of asphaltic pavements during their service life is highly dependent on the mechanical properties of the asphaltic layers. Therefore, in order to extend their service life, scientists and engineers are constantly trying to improve the mechanical properties of the asphaltic mixtures. One common method of improving the performance of asphaltic mixtures is using different types of ...

Effects of Compactor Types on Aggregate Orientation of Asphalt Mixtures

More than 90% of Malaysian roads are constructed using asphaltic concrete. However, previous investigations of asphaltic concrete have mainly concentrated on the macroscopic properties of the composite materials based on the assumption that the mixtures are homogeneous and isotropic. This paper applies a digital image processing technique to compare the orientations of coarse aggregate particle...

Investigating the Performance Characteristics of Asphaltic Concrete Containing Nano-Silica

Using nano-technology materials in the asphalt pavement industry is new compared with Portland cement concrete. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of nano-silica modification on some properties of a penetration grade asphalt cement and a typical asphalt concrete. 60/70 penetration grade bitumen was modified with different percentages of nano-silica (i.e. 1, 3 and 5%,...

Studying the Effects of Nano Sintering Additives on Microstructure and Electrical Properties of Potassium-Sodium Niobate Piezoceramics

In this paper, lead free (K0.48,Na0.52)NbO3 (KNN(48-52)) piezoelectric ceramics were made by conventional solid state sintering process. Additives of nano ZnO (n-ZnO), nano CuO (n-CuO) and nano SnO2 (n-SnO2) were used in order to decrease the sintering temperature, as well as modifying the dielectric, piezoelectric and ferroelectric propert...
